Why Summer Here Is Harder
Quick Answer: A pool in a mild climate can coast for a week. A pool in South Louisiana in August cannot. Our sun is strong enough to destroy unstabilized chlorine quickly, our water temperature climbs high enough to accelerate every reaction including algae growth, our rainfall is heavy enough to dilute and unbalance a pool in an afternoon, and our swim season means more people in the water more often. Each of those alone is manageable. Together they mean testing and adjusting more often than the back of the bottle suggests.
The Four Local Pressures
UV
Sunlight breaks down chlorine. Unstabilized chlorine in an uncovered pool under a full Louisiana summer sun does not last long, which is why stabilizer matters here more than in cloudier regions.
Heat
Warm water accelerates chemical consumption and biological growth. A pool sitting in the high 80s behaves very differently from one in the low 70s, and it will burn through sanitizer faster while being more hospitable to algae.
Rain
Our rain arrives hard and fast. A heavy afternoon storm dilutes sanitizer and stabilizer, shifts pH, and washes in organic material from the yard. Test after every significant rain rather than waiting for the schedule.
Bather Load
People bring in sweat, sunscreen, and organics, all of which consume sanitizer. A pool party is a chemical event, and the pool needs attention afterward rather than the next weekend.
What to Test and Why
- Free chlorine. The sanitizer actually available to work. This is the number that matters day to day.
- pH. Drives everything else. Out of range, chlorine works poorly, and the water becomes either corrosive or scale-forming.
- Total alkalinity. The buffer that keeps pH from swinging. Get this right and pH becomes much easier to hold.
- Cyanuric acid (stabilizer). Protects chlorine from UV. Essential here, and too much makes chlorine sluggish and hard to correct, since lowering it generally means diluting the water.
- Calcium hardness. Too low is aggressive toward plaster surfaces; too high scales.
Follow the target ranges your test kit and equipment manufacturer specify, and note that a saltwater chlorine generator has its own additional readings. Where numbers conflict, the equipment manufacturer’s guidance wins.
A Realistic Summer Routine
Twice a week: test free chlorine and pH, adjust as needed, empty skimmer and pump baskets, and skim the surface.
Weekly: brush the walls and floor, particularly steps, corners, and shaded areas where circulation is weakest and algae starts. Vacuum, and test the full panel.
After every heavy rain: test and correct. Do not skip this one.
Monthly: check filter pressure and clean or backwash as needed, and inspect equipment.
Brushing is the step people skip and the one that prevents the most problems. Algae establishes on surfaces before it colors the water, so mechanical disruption is doing real work.
Circulation Does the Heavy Lifting
Chemistry gets the attention, and circulation and filtration are what actually keep water clear. If the pump does not run long enough to turn the water over adequately, no amount of chemical adjustment will hold.
In peak summer, run times usually need to be longer than in cooler months. A variable-speed pump helps considerably, since running longer at lower speed both filters better and uses less energy than short bursts at full speed. If your pool is fighting you every week, look at run time and filter condition before buying more chemicals.

Green Water After a Storm

Chlorine That Will Not Hold
Usually one of three things: stabilizer too low so UV is destroying it, stabilizer too high so the chlorine is locked up and sluggish, or a heavy organic load consuming it. Test rather than guessing, because the fixes are opposites.
Cloudy Water
Often filtration or circulation rather than sanitizer. Check filter condition and run time first.
Rough or Staining Surfaces
